book number nine of 2016: fates and furies [lauren groff].

lauren groff’s fates and furies was one of the blockbuster books of 2015, and i finished it while i was in pondicherry at the beginning of the month. the first half of it took me a little while to get through, but holy crap did the second half fly.

fates and furies is the story of lotto and mathilde and how life brought them together. split into two parts, we first learn one character’s story and then the other’s, so the pieces fall into place over the course of the entire book. layers are revealed slowly, weaving back-and-forth between past and present, so you never really know what is going to happen next.

i am always a fan of narratives told from varying points of view, so i immediately liked groff’s writing style. and because there are so many twists and turns throughout the story, it is nearly impossible to predict and guess what might come next [except for one thing that was a little obvious]. fates and furies kept me on the edge of my seat just as it did cindy when she read it in january, and it fueled many discussions over the characters and their stories.

as i mentioned earlier, there were a few bits in the first half that dragged a little for me, but the second half made it completely worth it. i flew through the final 200 pages, unable to put it down. cindy and i talked about it so much that i ended up passing the book along to fagun before she left for pune because she was so intrigued by our discussions.

i’m intrigued to check out some of groff’s other works and will definitely read whatever she publishes next.

my goodreads rating: 4 out of 5 // average rating is 3.62

currently reading: i am malala; possession; little women; and goblet of fire. hoping to have at least one crossed off by next week!
