bangalore eats: goan food at carnival de goa.

i have been hearing great things about carnival de goa for a few months, so after a recent shopping adventure with avni, we decided to treat ourselves to drinks and some delicious goan food [commercial street on a saturday evening is a serious business].

we got a little confused when finding the restaurant, because neither of us knew that the grill house had expanded to take up the first floor as well. we sat, looked around for a moment, and then were really confused when we were handed menus for grill house. after inquiring with the host, we realized we needed to go up another flight of stairs…oops. perhaps a sign and an arrow could go a long way for them. once we got to the correct floor, we opted for a table on the terrace. the weather was pleasant, and we could watch the traffic while we enjoyed our meal.

we ordered our drinks, and after chatting with our waiter for a few minutes we decided on rava fry prawns and masala fry pomfret for our starters. the prawns were really good, and i especially liked the pomfret. we finished off the prawns in no time, but the pomfret was pretty huge, so it came home with me and was lunch during the week.

but the highlight of my night was the goan sausages i had for my main course. i love goan sausages a lot, so as soon as i saw them on the menu i knew what i would be having. there are a ton of seafood options as well as other traditional goan dishes like xacuti, but i only had eyes for the sausages. just a plate of sausages and some pav on the side, and i was a happy camper. i packed my leftovers, and i stretched them out as long as i could because i didn’t want them to get over. avni had a chicken vindaloo that she said was good as well.

it ended up being a little pricier than i had anticipated because our pomfret was so big [prices are based on weight] and because i opted for jack daniel’s instead of a cheaper drink, but i was still happy with the visit. it’s a very family-friendly restaurant, and it was nice to have a relaxing dinner out on a saturday night without having to deal with huge crowds or ridiculously loud music. and they have goan sausages, so it’s safe to say i am a fan. i also very much liked the murals inside, and it looked like it would be a nice setting when the weather is too warm to sit outside.

the details:

location: 2nd floor, 8/6 kensington point. ulsoor road, ulsoor. bangalore – 560042.

landmark: across from 1mg; above the grill house.

serves non-veg: yes, meat and seafood.

serves drinks: yes, full bar available. and they have drink specials to check out.

wifi available? absolutely no idea.

what we ordered: kingfisher draught x 4; jack daniel’s 60ml x 3; coke [drinks]. rava fry prawns; masala fry pomfret [starters]. plate of goan sausages; chicken vindaloo; plate of pav x 2 [mains].

our bill: i don’t remember exactly, but it was somewhere around rs. 4,200, which we split down the middle. so although i will be back, it won’t be a regular stop for me.

my zomato rating: 4 out of 5 // average rating is 4.1

fun facts: they had a seafood festival in may that sounded like fun, so i’ll be keeping an eye out for that again next year.

to keep in mind: the address on zomato says it’s on the 1st floor, but it’s actually on the 2nd. seafood prices are based on weight, so ask to see the piece before they cook it [this was a great idea in hindsight].

will i go back? umm, they have goan sausages. so yes.

xx
